I really struggle with making myself put a book down if I’m not enjoying it, but lately, I’ve been trying to make a conscious effort to stop wasting valuable reading time on books I don’t like. I’m getting a little better at it, so hopefully I’ll be able to spend more time on good books and less time on bad ones!
Anyway, here’s a list of some books that I’ve accepted that I’m just never going to finish:
The Queen’s Rising by Rebecca Ross
The Queen’s Rising started off really strong. I flew through the first few chapters and then… it hit a wall. I gave up with this one around halfway through, when I realised it was headed in a direction I was no longer going to enjoy.
Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones
I want to love Wintersong, I really do. I’ve picked this one up so many times since buying it a couple of years ago, but there’s just something about it that doesn’t quite grip me the way certain other books have. For a while, I refused to believe that it wasn’t for me but, after reading the first quarter three times over, I’ve finally accepted that I’m never going to finish it.
A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
A Curse So Dark and Lonely was one of my most anticipated reads for this year, so I’m sure you can imagine my disappointment when, halfway through, I realised I couldn’t stand to read a single page more. This one has been really popular amongst the bookish community this year, but I couldn’t see past how much I disliked the writing style, and how little substance I found the characters to have.
Heartless by Marissa Meyer
I bought Heartless a few years back when I was on a big fairytale re-telling binge but, after reaching the halfway mark, I wasn’t feeling it one bit, and I haven’t felt at all inclined to pick it up since. I also gave up on Meyer’s Cinder series pretty quickly, so I think her writing style just isn’t for me.
The Red Queen Series by Victoria Aveyard
This last one is technically a series rather than a book — but oh man, I just do not understand the hype around this series. Getting through the first book was a massive struggle, and I managed about two chapters of the second book before finally calling it a day. I’m quite glad I gave up when I did, though, because it feels like there’s another book out in this series every few months at this point, and I’m running out of room on my bookshelves!
Which books have you decided to give up on? Have you ever persevered and been glad that you did?
